The European Central Bank continues preparation for the digital euro project

On 29 October 2025, the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB) decided to move forward to the next stage of preparatory work on the digital euro project. Previously, the ECB had conducted a two-year preparation phase, focusing on laying the groundwork for a possible issuance. The main objectives of this phase included:

  1. developing a draft rulebook on the functioning of the digital euro;
  2. selecting potential infrastructure and platform providers for the operation of the digital euro;
  3. drawing conclusions from experiments and user research;
  4. conducting in-depth technical analyses;
  5. engaging with stakeholders to ensure that the digital euro meets the highest standards of quality, security, privacy, and usability.

The ECB plans to carry out all necessary activities to be ready for a potential launch in 2029. In 2027, trial exercises are also planned to prepare and test systems ahead of a possible issuance.
